February 8, 1912 Post Office Comes to Key Largo
When rail service began in the Upper Keys in 1908 there was a little station called Jewfish, the Florida railroad flagstop at the Jewfish Creek Railroad Bridge for the bridge tender. There was a post office at this location which was practically inaccessible because of Lake Surprise. The Jewfish post office location was moved to the new Key Largo depot area (located just north of the St. Justin Martyr Church at mile marker 105.6 and in the U.S. 1 highway median strip) on February 8, 1912, with David Sasser as postmaster. The post office name, however, remained Jewfish, Florida. The post office was located in the various postmasters’ homes.
